Computational Design

Site: Borivali East Station front

Computational Design Approach:

The module began with the understanding of the idea of a single unit; a fundamental building block whose logic could be repeated, varied, and assembled. By setting up a rule-based system, governing rotation, scaling, aggregation, or spacing, the unit evolved into larger formations. This method allowed form to emerge not through arbitrary composition, but through a system of constraints and possibilities that mirrored the flows and intensities of Borivali East.

Over four days, Borivali East was mapped through its movement patterns, density shifts, informal negotiations of space, and temporal cycles of use. The site’s condition as a bustling transport hub with a constant rhythm of arrivals and pauses became central to shaping the design rules. Observing how people waited; sometimes in motion, sometimes in stillness; revealed that “waiting” is not a passive act but a condition of being in-between, of negotiating time within space.
